informations about dials
Any „old school“ collectors trace a strictly opinion for unrestored dials. They have the opinion, that only complete untouched vintage watches are valuable. Such untouched watches which has been kept in it’s box and never seen the light of day are extremly rare! This very small part of high end vintage watches (possibly complete with original papers and box) will be more and more seldom and costs a lot of money on the market. But, other vintage watch dealer will confirm this, the vast majority (arround 90%) of all watch enthusiasts and watch buyers prefer good looking watches with smoothly restored dials than ones with degradation through ageing. These mechanical wrist watches were produced for wearing and were exposed the sunlight, changing temperatures and humidity during a period of 50 years and more. Wearing the watches with care of course, but definitely not hidden away in a box or safe. It’s comparing with an old car. Both, watches and cars were built to be used and enjoyed. After a time of 50, 60 or 70 years were happened any damages, spots or discolouring on the dials. These’re rusty spots, because any moisture came under the glass into the dial. This process of degradation can’t be ever stopped. The dial will destroyed more and more. In the end the whole watch is lost (like comparing with an oldtimer again: if you don’t do anymore, the car wouldn’t be roadworthy and attractive). By the way, all our watches have original dials! Some of them are complete untouched, some of them got a new coating. You can see details in the description to the watch. What means "refreshed" exactly? In the past (manufacturing about 1930 - 1980) the dials were protected with a usual cellulose/acetate lacquer foundation. The result: this mixture isn’t resistant to age! The surface texture of these old lacques are porose. Oxygen and humidity could get into the watch. In consequence the dials got dark spots and unaesthetic discoloration (you can see this result on many Vintage watches). This chemical process goes on steady and can’t be stopped. In the end the dial will destroyed completely and the watch is lost. This lacquer material mix will use no more today. The modern technology remove the old lacquer in a gently way and replace an UV- and color resistant synthetic lacquer. The dial keeps his original coloring. The original hour numerals, indexes and hands were placed at the dial again. You can say it’s a conservation method to protect the dial and stops the progressive decay. Important to know: this procedure were made by the dial manufacture professionally, they produces dials for famous Swiss watch manufactures. You can be lucky, your timepiece will be a beautiful eyecatcher now and in further time and a historical highlight for numerous decades.
